Cardiology is a medical speciality that examines, diagnoses, monitors and treats the heart and vascular system.
Cardiologists or cardiologists deal with heart disease, vascular disease and other problems that can lead to cardiovascular disease.
This speciality focuses on the protection of heart health, early diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of heart diseases.
Among the diseases diagnosed, monitored and treated by cardiology, there are some diseases that are among the most important health problems of today. Some of these diseases can be listed as follows:
In which areas do cardiologists provide services?
Routine Check-ups: They carry out regular checks and evaluations of individuals at risk of heart disease.
Diagnosis and Diagnosis: They use various tests and imaging methods to diagnose heart diseases. They evaluate cardiovascular health with methods such as ECG (Electrocardiography),Echo (Echocardiography),Holter ECG, Holter Blood Pressure and coronary CT angiography (bloodless angiography - virtual angiography).
Treatment: They treat heart problems with drug therapy and interventional procedures (angiography-stent, pacemaker, heart valve replacement and rhythm disorder correction).
Heart Attacks and Emergencies: They provide rapid intervention in emergency situations, especially in cases such as heart attacks.
Rehabilitation: They manage the rehabilitation process of patients with heart disease and help them transition to a healthy lifestyle.)

1- Heart Attack
A heart attack should be interpreted not as a disease itself but as a symptom or consequence of different conditions. Continuous blood flow is essential for maintaining the heart's health. However, if the vessels nourishing the heart lose their function or undergo structural changes such as narrowing, thickening, or loss of flexibility, the blood flow to the heart may decrease or stop. In this situation, the heart may not receive sufficient nourishment, leading to an inability to meet its oxygen needs through blood, a condition referred to as a heart attack. Prompt intervention is required as a heart attack can result in fatal consequences.
2- Coronary Artery Disease
The primary function of coronary arteries is to nourish the heart, ensuring proper blood flow to the heart. Due to factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, poor nutrition, smoking, and genetic predisposition, the flexibility of coronary arteries may decrease, leading to narrowing or blockage. Coronary artery disease is defined as the loss of function of the vessels that nourish the heart. If not treated, coronary insufficiency can lead to serious health problems, including heart attacks. Myocardial Perfusion Scintigraphy is the most reliable method for detecting coronary insufficiency.
3- Coronary Artery Disease
The primary function of coronary arteries is to nourish the heart, ensuring proper blood flow to the heart. Due to factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, poor nutrition, smoking, and genetic predisposition, the flexibility of coronary arteries may decrease, leading to narrowing or blockage. Coronary artery disease is defined as the loss of function of the vessels that nourish the heart. If not treated, coronary insufficiency can lead to serious health problems, including heart attacks. Myocardial Perfusion Scintigraphy is the most reliable method for detecting coronary insufficiency.
4- Heart Failure
Heart failure, a condition that can occur due to heart and vascular diseases, high blood pressure, valve problems, or alcohol use, is the inability of the heart to pump an adequate amount of blood. When less blood is pumped to the body's tissues, all cells are affected by this condition.
5- Cardiac Rhythm and Conduction Disorders
Arrhythmias and conduction disorders disrupt the heart's ability to contract regularly. Individuals experiencing cardiac rhythm and conduction disorders due to factors such as previous heart attacks, coronary artery disease, changes in sodium and potassium levels in the blood, pump blood irregularly. Symptoms of this condition include palpitations, difficulty breathing, and irregular heartbeats. Those showing symptoms of arrhythmia and conduction disorders should seek immediate attention from the cardiology unit.
6- Heart Valve Diseases
As a result of the decreased function of heart valves, blood flow cannot be provided as needed, causing blood to flow backward. Heart valve diseases, which occur due to narrowing, calcification, and expansion of mitral and aortic valves, have symptoms such as palpitations, fainting, weakness, and chest pain.
7- Peripheral Vascular Diseases
Due to factors such as obesity, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure, arteries can partially or completely become blocked over time. The reduced function of these vessels that should pump blood to the body prevents blood transmission. If an artery is blocked, it is called arterial disease; if a vein is blocked, it is referred to as venous disease. Endarterectomy and peripheral bypass methods are applied in the treatment of peripheral vascular diseases.
8- Aortic Vascular Diseases
Aortic vascular diseases, which have symptoms such as abdominal pain, coughing, difficulty breathing, severe chest pain, reduced pulse, chronic fatigue, and vascular occlusion, are classified based on changes in the vessel. If the aorta expands, it is called an aneurysm; if there is separation in the layers of the aortic vessel, it is called dissection. At the same time, the occlusion or narrowing of the aortic vessel is also included in aortic vascular diseases. Patients showing symptoms of the disease should undergo examinations such as computed tomography, MRI, and ultrasound for diagnosis in the cardiology unit.
9- Hypertension
Hypertension refers to the condition where the pressure in the arteries is excessively high. There are various factors that can cause high blood pressure, and sometimes these factors may not be fully identified. The disease, which manifests itself with symptoms such as fatigue, ringing in the ears, bloating, and nosebleeds, should be brought under control as soon as possible.
10- High Cholesterol (Hypercholesterolemia)
High cholesterol, which can arise due to lifestyle, smoking and alcohol use, obesity, inactivity, incorrect nutrition, and genetic predisposition, can lead to heart attacks, vascular occlusion, and related problems if left untreated. If cholesterol, a necessary building block for the healthy functioning of metabolism, is higher than normal, it opens the doors to diseases. Changes in diet, medication, and hormone replacement therapy can normalize blood cholesterol levels. Regular blood tests for the patient should not be neglected, and the patient should be kept under control.
11- Congenital Heart Diseases
Heart and vascular diseases may not always develop later in life. Anomalies in the development of babies in the womb can occur due to factors such as medications used during pregnancy, diseases contracted, exposure to chemicals, etc. Therefore, the first eight weeks of pregnancy are crucial. Diseases such as the formation of a gap in the wall between the right and left atria (Atrial Septal Defect),the formation of a hole in the wall between the ventricles (Ventricular Septal Defect),heart murmurs, and narrowing of the pulmonary artery valve leading to thickening of the right ventricle (Fallot Tetralogy) are among congenital heart diseases.
At Ata Sağlık Hospital, we conduct detailed examinations of patients showing symptoms of heart and vascular diseases who come to our cardiology unit. We diagnose their problems by learning all elements, from the family history of our patients to their general health conditions. Utilizing all the conveniences provided by technology, we ensure our service privilege in cases where urgent intervention is required.
